featuring recent griz tennis victories and big sky tennis competition |
The Montana men's tennis team showcased their dominance with a commanding 6-1 victory over UC San Diego at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula.
Head coach Jason Brown, the reigning Big Sky and ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year, celebrated his 100th career win as the Grizzlies swept five of six singles matches in straight sets.
This triumph elevates Montana's season record to 3-3, while Brown's impressive tenure now stands at 100-71 over nine years, including a remarkable 47-8 home record.
UC San Diego, coming off a 4-3 win over Sac State, fell to 5-5 after their northern road trip.
Despite the absence of top singles player Tom Bittner, sidelined due to illness, the Grizzlies' depth proved formidable.
Freshman Matt Upton delivered standout performances, partnering with senior Eivind Tandberg for a 6-0 doubles win and dominating his singles match 6-1, 6-0.
Upton's season singles record now stands at 3-3, with his first dual doubles win arriving at a crucial juncture as Big Sky play approaches.
Coach Brown praised the team's adaptability, emphasizing the importance of depth in overcoming challenges like illnesses and injuries.
He also acknowledged UC San Diego's resilience during their demanding road schedule.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies embark on a seven-match road stretch throughout March, beginning with duals against North Dakota on February 27 and 28, followed by the Bronco Spring Invitational in Boise.
Upton expressed confidence in the team's momentum, noting their readiness for the upcoming challenges.
As the Griz tennis team continues to build on their recent successes, the Missoula community eagerly anticipates their performance in the competitive landscape of Big Sky tennis. |
