The Griz had nothing to play on Saturday, and that may have been the best thing on the schedule.

Montana sits at 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky, on a two-game losing streak, according to the official schedule.

The bye came after the two games that flipped the season's mood.

How the skid happened

On Oct. 10, Northern Arizona beat Montana 49-44 in Flagstaff. On Oct. 17, Idaho won 42-35 in Missoula and took the Little Brown Stein home, per the schedule and the box score.

Montana's own game story called the team shorthanded against Idaho.

Both were one-score games. Both were at the end of a stretch of four conference games in five weeks.

Where that leaves the Big Sky race

Montana is fourth in the conference standings, behind Montana State (4-1), Northern Arizona (4-1) and Weber State (4-2), according to the Big Sky.

UC Davis and Idaho are level with the Griz at 3-2 in league play.

Three conference games remain, and Montana has to win most of them to stay in the title conversation.

Next: Saturday at Eastern Washington

Montana at Eastern Washington, Saturday, Oct. 31, 2 p.m. Mountain, at Roos Field in Cheney, Washington.

The Eagles are 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Sky, 12th of 13 teams in the standings.

It's on Scripps Sports and ESPN+, with the call on the Grizzly Sports Radio Network, per the schedule.

Yes, it's Halloween. Plan accordingly.
