120 Years of Trust: How Flying S Title & Escrow Is Helping Missoula Move Forward |
A family-owned company since 1905, Flying S Title & Escrow pairs more than a century of history with a focus on what comes next for Missoula homeowners, businesses and real estate professionals. |

Every home sale, refinance and land deal in Missoula has a moment where everything comes together: the closing table. For more than 120 years, Flying S Title & Escrow has built its reputation on making that moment secure, smooth and personal.
A family story that began in 1905
The company’s roots go back to 1905, when William Herman Stufflebeam founded an abstract company in southeast Idaho with just four employees, indexing land parcels by hand. More than a century later it’s still a family business. Quinn Stufflebeam, the founder’s grandson, leads the company today as CEO.
The name has a story too. “Flying S” comes from a ranch brand created by Dwain Stufflebeam, the founder’s son, and his wife, Joyce: the “S” for Stufflebeam, the wings for Dwain’s love of flying. Several of the family’s title companies took on the Flying S Title & Escrow name in 2022.
Flying S has been part of Missoula since 1981, when the company opened its first Montana offices in Missoula, Hamilton and Superior. Today the family’s title business serves communities across Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
More than a title company
“Every transaction represents a family, a dream, a business, or a new beginning,” the Flying S team says.
That philosophy shapes how the company works with homeowners, buyers, sellers, real estate professionals, lenders and builders. Its mission, in its own words, is “to provide trusted, secure, and seamless real estate transactions while helping strengthen the communities we serve.”
What sets Flying S apart starts with its records. The company maintains its own title plant, giving it direct access to local property records going back to the original land patents. That supports fast, accurate title research. It also works with all title insurance underwriters admitted in Montana, so it can tailor solutions to each transaction.
But the team says the real difference is how it shows up for people: “We view ourselves as an extension of our customers’ team — providing responsive communication, industry expertise, innovative tools, education, and personalized support.”
Neighbors first
What many people don’t know, the team says, is that the Flying S staff “live, work, volunteer, and raise their families in the communities we serve.”
“What we love most about being part of the Missoula community is the people and the relationships,” they shared. “Being part of the excitement of a first home, a growing business, or a new chapter in someone’s life is what makes our work so meaningful.”
Teaching the trade
One of the things Flying S is most excited about is its monthly training series for real estate professionals and industry partners. Sessions cover topics such as New Agent Training, Networking Roundtables, Title 101, AI for Real Estate, Understanding Water Rights, Fraud Prevention, How a Title Plant Works, Investment Properties, 1031 Exchanges, Complex Transactions and Land Development. Anyone interested in upcoming dates and topics can follow Flying S Title & Escrow on social media or reach out to the local team.
Looking ahead
Flying S says it is investing in technology, education and resources, including enhanced digital platforms that streamline transactions, improve communication and create a more seamless closing experience. It is also expanding the training, marketing support and business-building resources it offers real estate professionals.
“Our history is something we’re proud of,” the team says, “but it’s our commitment to our clients, their customers, and the communities we call home that continues to drive us forward.”
A message to Missoula
“Real estate is about more than properties. It’s about people, families, dreams, and new beginnings. Thank you, Missoula, for allowing Flying S to be part of those moments.”
