Missoula Eats & Treats: Great Burn’s Last Months on McDonald Avenue |
After 12 years, a Midtown brewery has to find a new home. Plus: a new downtown drive-thru coffee stop and pastrami on the way. |

One of Midtown’s neighborhood breweries is on the move.
After 12 years on McDonald Avenue, Great Burn Brewing has to leave its home, according to a post the brewery shared with customers and reported by NBC Montana on Oct. 3.
The brewery said it will stay open through the end of 2026 while the owners look for a new spot in the Midtown and Southside area.
No new location has been announced.
Why it’s moving
The brewery’s block is part of a planned redevelopment. Developers of Midtown Market, the Whole Foods-anchored project on Brooks Street, have asked the city’s redevelopment agency for financing to clear and rebuild a site occupied by the Brooks Street Motor Inn and Great Burn, NBC Montana reported.
We covered the project’s details and timeline in our Midtown Market story.
Still pouring: how to visit
Great Burn is run by brewmaster Michael Howard and general manager Gregory Howard, according to the brewery’s website.
The simplest way to support a local business through a move is to show up. The next few months are the last chance to drink a pint in the McDonald Avenue taproom.
Also on the menu
Liquid Planet goes drive-thru downtown. The Missoula coffee company opened a new downtown location with a drive-thru at 400 W. Broadway in early October, announcing the opening on its Instagram, as reported by Newstalk KGVO.
It shares the building with the UPS Store. The company’s Brooks Street location closed in May, KPAX reported.
Pastrami Franks is coming to West Front. A sit-down spot promising old-school hot dogs, half-pound pastrami sandwiches and fresh-baked rolls is planned for 311 W. Front St., with a projected December opening, Newstalk KGVO reported in September, citing the business’s social media.
Openings slip, so we’ll confirm the date before you plan dinner around it.
