Tyler Thompson's Stellar Season Bolsters University of Montana Basketball |
Freshman Guard's Performance Elevates Grizzlies' Prospects in Big Sky Conference |
Tyler Thompson is rapidly becoming a standout for the University of Montana basketball team, making a compelling case for the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year title.
As a redshirt freshman, Thompson is averaging 9.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, showcasing his versatility on the court.
His shooting prowess is evident with a 44.2% field goal percentage, including an impressive 41.4% from beyond the arc.
In addition to his scoring, Thompson has contributed 1.2 assists per game, along with 0.6 steals and 0.5 blocks, highlighting his all-around game.
Thompson's standout performance came in a recent 81-65 victory over Weber State, where he scored a season-high 21 points, all from three-point range, going 7-for-9 from beyond the arc.
This achievement places him among the elite freshmen in Grizzlies' history, being only the second to hit seven three-pointers in a single game, a feat previously accomplished by Bobby Moorehead in 2016.
His contributions have been instrumental in the Grizzlies' current 11-9 overall record and 5-2 standing in the Big Sky Conference.
Thompson's emergence, alongside fellow freshman Kenyon Aguino, marks the first time since the 2020-21 season that two Grizzly freshmen have averaged at least 8.0 points per game in the same season.
As the season progresses, Thompson's consistent performance continues to be a driving force for the Grizzlies, solidifying his position as a key player and a strong contender for conference honors.
His development not only enhances the team's current success but also sets a promising foundation for the future of University of Montana basketball. |
