River Road Phase 1: Sidewalks, Bike Lanes and a Public Meeting Oct. 28 |
Missoula is sketching sidewalks or a shared-use path, possible bike lanes and a new water main on River Road, and it wants neighbors’ input first. |

If you live on, walk or drive River Road, the City of Missoula wants to hear from you before the design for the first phase goes any further.
The details below come from the city’s announcement, published Oct. 13 and checked Saturday, Oct. 24.
The meeting
City staff and the consulting firm IMEG will present early design concepts and gather feedback.
The meeting is hosted by the city’s Public Works & Mobility Transportation Engineering Division and the Missoula Redevelopment Agency (MRA).
What Phase 1 covers
Phase 1 runs along River Road from the existing improvements west of Russell Street to Bondurant Court.
The concepts include:
The final design depends on available right-of-way, utility locations, the irrigation ditch, guardrails and other limits along the corridor.
Why the city says it matters
The city lists safer walking routes for all ages and abilities, better stormwater management and water quality, more street trees, and better connections for people walking, biking and driving across town.
Who pays
The MRA plans to fund Phase 1 with existing Urban Renewal District II tax increment funds.
Property owners in the district will not be directly assessed for the project, according to the city.
When it would be built
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027. The Oct. 28 meeting comes before the design advances, so it’s the best time to weigh in.
Making your comments count
Early concepts are the easiest stage to change. Specifics help most: where you walk or bike today, where crossings feel unsafe, where water pools after a storm, and how a path or sidewalk would meet your driveway or the irrigation ditch.
Can’t make it?
The announcement doesn’t describe an online comment form. Questions go to Mark Todorovich, transportation project coordinator with Public Works & Mobility, at 406-552-6098 or TodorovichM@ci.missoula.mt.us.
