If you've spotted a big dump truck rolling through Missoula with a beagle hanging out the window, you've probably crossed paths with Joel Fowlkes and his co-pilot, Dozer — the unofficial mascot of Maxx Transfer LLC.
Joel is Missoula through and through. Born and raised here, he got his start in commercial driving back in 2011, right as the Bakken oil boom was taking off. For two years, he hauled all manner of products and materials across Montana, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan — long hours, tough conditions, and a crash course in heavy trucking that most people never get.
But by 2013, Joel was ready to come home. He returned to Missoula to start a family and spent the better part of a decade driving a fuel truck, delivering fuel to stations throughout Western Montana. It was steady work, but it wasn't his own. In the spring of 2022, Joel made the leap: he bought his own truck and struck out on his own, launching Maxx Transfer LLC and bringing Dozer along for the ride as his full-time copilot.
A Truck Built for More Than Big Jobs
One of the biggest misconceptions Joel runs into? That a truck this size is strictly for commercial work. In reality, Maxx Transfer handles plenty of residential jobs too — delivering large quantities of material directly to homeowners, not just contractors and job sites.
That flexibility comes from a combination of access to a wide range of materials, deep knowledge of the Missoula area built over 15 years behind the wheel, and experience hauling heavy trucks through all kinds of conditions — from oilfield routes in North Dakota to the backroads of Western Montana. Whether it's a large-scale commercial project or a homeowner tackling a landscaping job, Joel's goal is the same: timely, dependable service for the Missoula area.
Family First, Community Always
Ask Joel what's driven him through all of this, and the answer is simple: his kids. Starting Maxx Transfer wasn't just about being his own boss — it was about building a schedule flexible enough to coach his kids' sports teams and be present for them while still preparing for their future. He calls that flexibility "the best gift imaginable."
That same community-first mindset shows up in how Joel runs his business. He's donated his time and materials to the Mount Jumbo Westside Little League, helping support their mission of giving local kids a great experience on the field. You'll also see Maxx Transfer's name around the Glacier Ice Rink, another spot where Joel's supported the community that's supported him.
When asked what he loves most about being part of Missoula, Joel doesn't hesitate: "The people. We are so fortunate to live where we do, and it's so great to see all the improvements being made to our area, and watching the vision of what we'd all like our community to become unfolding."
Watching Missoula Grow
Joel's optimism about Missoula's future runs deep. He's especially excited about the wave of ADA-accessibility projects currently in motion around town, along with the broader push to create more spaces where everyone in the community can gather and enjoy what Missoula has to offer.
It's also part of why Joel encourages people to get involved at the local level. His message to the community: if you've got ideas for what you'd like to see happen around town, don't sit on them — reach out to your Ward representative on the City Council or your County Commissioners. Change in a town like Missoula, he believes, comes from people speaking up.
A Simple Thank You
For all the growth Maxx Transfer has seen since 2022, Joel keeps coming back to one thing: gratitude. "Thank you all so much for the opportunity to be part of your projects," he says — a fitting sentiment from a guy who built his business around showing up for the people and projects that need him.
