Missoula PaddleHeads Adjust July 4th Fireworks After City Council Denies Noise Waiver

Fireworks Show Moved Earlier to Comply with 10 PM Noise Ordinance

The Missoula PaddleHeads revised their July 4th fireworks show after the city council denied a noise ordinance waiver, forcing the team to scale back the display and move the start time earlier to comply with Missoula's 10:00 PM residential noise curfew.

The decision sparked debate about balancing community celebrations with neighborhood quality of life, especially in the South Hills residential area adjacent to Ogren Park at Allegiance Field. The PaddleHeads will now launch fireworks at 9:30 PM instead of the traditional 10:15 PM post-game finale.

What Changed: New Fireworks Plan

Original Plan:

• Game starts: 7:05 PM

• Fireworks launch: 10:15 PM (post-game)

• Duration: 25-minute display with grand finale

• Waiver requested: Extend noise curfew to 11:00 PM

Revised Plan (After Council Denial):

• Game starts: 6:00 PM (moved up by 1 hour)

• Fireworks launch: 9:30 PM (between innings 7-8)

• Duration: 18-minute display (scaled back slightly)

• Compliance: All fireworks end by 10:00 PM per city ordinance

The PaddleHeads initially requested a one-night waiver to extend Missoula's residential noise curfew from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM, arguing that Fourth of July is a special civic celebration. But the city council voted 7-5 against the waiver after hearing concerns from South Hills residents.

"We love the PaddleHeads and we love fireworks," said Councilmember Heather Anderson. "But we also have to respect noise ordinances that protect neighborhoods year-round. One-off waivers set a precedent we're not comfortable with."

Community Debate Over Tradition vs. Regulations

Missoula's noise ordinance prohibits "loud, unnecessary, or unusual noises" after 10:00 PM in residential zones. The ordinance was updated in 2018 to address complaints about late-night bar noise, construction, and outdoor events.

South Hills residents — many within half a mile of Ogren Park — argued that fireworks shaking windows past 10:00 PM disrupts sleep, frightens pets, and creates stress for veterans with PTSD and children with sensory sensitivities.

"It's not anti-celebration," wrote South Hills resident Karen Mitchell in a public comment. "It's pro-consideration. We can have fireworks at 9:30 PM and everyone still has a great time."

The PaddleHeads' response:

General Manager Christian Hansel said the team respects the decision and has redesigned the show to fit the 9:30 PM window. "We're still bringing an incredible fireworks display," he said. "It's just going to happen a little earlier, and honestly, that might be better for families with young kids."
