Exploring Missoula's Dog Parks: A Guide to Off-Leash Areas and Regulations

Discover the best spots for your canine companions and stay informed about local guidelines.

EXCLUSIVE

Missoula, Montana, offers a variety of dog-friendly parks and trails, each with specific regulations to ensure safety and enjoyment for all visitors.

Mount Sentinel and North Hills

On Mount Sentinel, leashes are mandatory where posted, including the M Trail and sections on the south face. In the North Hills, dogs must be leashed for the first 300 yards of the Waterworks Trail and in designated areas. Beyond these points, dogs are permitted off-leash under voice restraint, meaning owners must be within 25 yards and able to control their dogs effectively.

Mount Jumbo

North of Saddle Road is closed to dogs and people from December 1 to April 30. From May 1 to November 30, dogs can be off-leash under voice restraint. South of Saddle Road is closed from December 1 to March 15, reopening for off-leash use under voice restraint from March 16 to November 30. Specific areas, such as lands below Upper Lincoln Hills Drive and the "L" Trail, have seasonal leash requirements.

USFS Missoula Ranger District Recreation Areas

In the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area, certain trails have seasonal dog restrictions. For instance, from December 1 to March 1, dogs are prohibited from the southern boundary up Rattlesnake Creek to Milepost 1.7. Year-round restrictions apply to areas like Sawmill and Curry Gulch, while Woods Gulch has no dog restrictions.

Pattee Canyon Recreation Area

Dogs are prohibited on groomed cross-country ski trails during winter to prevent damage but are allowed on the Deer Creek and Sam Braxton trails. Areas like Crazy Canyon west to City of Missoula property have no restrictions.

Blue Mountain Recreation Area

This area is particularly suited for dogs under voice restraint, with no specific dog restrictions. Owners are reminded to pick up and pack out their dog's waste.

Marshall Mountain Park

Opened in August 2024, Marshall Mountain Park spans 420 acres and offers various recreational opportunities. However, due to high usage and trail design, dogs are not allowed at any time to ensure safety and preserve the environment.

Upcoming Developments

Missoula Parks and Recreation is planning a new 5.4-acre park at Scott and Rogers to replace White Pine Park. Community feedback has emphasized the importance of including a dog park in the design. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with funding primarily from the sale of White Pine Park.

Responsible Pet Ownership

City ordinances require dogs to be leashed on all city streets, trails, and parks. Pet owners must immediately remove their pet's waste from public spaces. Violations can result in fines ranging from $25 to $500. To support responsible pet ownership, the city provides Mutt Mitt dispensers in local parks and encourages owners to carry extra litter bags.

By adhering to these guidelines, dog owners can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all park visitors while preserving Missoula's beautiful natural spaces.
